Imaging of Odontogenic Infection: A Pictorial Review of What Can Happen When You Don't Floss!

Study Description

The purpose of this study is to review the use of dental anatomy and terminology on radiology head and neck imaging of dental infections. This will cover the description of the structures of the tooth and periodontal region, directional terms used by dentists (e.g. mesial, distal, buccal, lingual, etc.), as well as the American Dental Association numbering system. The pertinent anatomic spaces that can be affected by dental infections will be reviewed, including the oral cavity, sublingual, submandibular, masticator, and buccal spaces.

We will use mPower to find and obtain information of adult cases of dental infection between November 15, 2009 and November 15, 2019 of: 1) Localized dental disease including dental caries, periapical lucency/periodontal disease without complication. 2) Localized periosteal and vestibular abscesses confined to the oral cavity. 3) Extra-oral spread of infection including sublingual spread, sublingual/submandibular spread, masticator spread. 4) Osteomyelitis in the head and neck

We plan to query head and neck CTs that show dental infection on MPower. MPower is a software database of UF Health Jacksonville radiology studies and reports. We will use a accession number obtained in MPower to acquire the images in VISAGE/PACS. We will identify patients on MPower and confirm their diagnosis in by accessing their hospital notes on EPIC.

We will select cases and/or images that show dental infection (i.e. localized dental disease, localized periosteal and vestibular abscesses, extra-oral spread of infection, and osteomyelitis). Before exporting, we will remove the personal health information on the radiology images in VISAGE/PACS, which can export images without dates or identifiers, and we will label the image based on the imaging finding we are going to discuss. We need about 1-2 images per patient.
